 The museography: building the exhibitions

Adrien ya tenía casi toda la selección de fotografías y el poema que acompañaría a una de ellas; pero todavía había que diseñar ambas exposiciones: definir el orden de las fotos, el material y tamaño de impresión, la estructura para el montaje, en general, la museografía, y eso me hacía muy feliz porque podría hacerlo de principio a fin.
Adrien had almost all the selection of photographs for both exhibitions, and the poem which acompanies one of them; but there was still the need to design many things; define the order of the photos, the size and material for printing, the structure for showing them, in general terms  the design of the museography, and that made me very happy since I could design it from begining to end.

El había considerado pedir a los ayuntamientos de cada ciudad unas mamparas de metal que aquí en Francia son típicas. El problema es que dependíamos de que nos hicieran el préstamo, que estuvieran en buenas condiciones, que fueran suficientes, y otros etcéteras; entonces pensó en comprarlas, pero cuando las vi, desistimos de la idea, además de caras no me parecían la mejor idea porque las fotografías no tendrían un fondo de respaldo sobre qué sobresalir y aunque parezca un detalle sin importancia, al estar sobre una superficie opaca la imagen que está al frente logra brillar.
He thought on asking the municipalities of each city to lend us metal panels that here in France are very common. The problem there was that we would depend on them to lend us, and also if they were good conditions, if they were enough, and other details, so his first thought was to buy them; but when I saw them we dismissed that idea, besides being expensive for our budget, they didn't seem the best idea for the pictures because they wouldn't have a background to make them stand out; it may seem a pointless detail but with that little gesture, having a backdrop, the images placed in front are able to shine.

Llevo años diseñando y construyendo mobiliario para mi casa con páneles de madera y varillas roscadas, así que decidí usar los mismos materiales para hacer una especie de biombo donde podríamos colocar las fotografías. El costo de montaje disminuyó considerablemente con esta solución pero apareció otro problema; mi llegada a Francia se retrasó y para la fecha en que debían de construirse Adrien estaría solo, así que rediseñé todo.
I have been designing and building for years furniture for my house made with OSB boards and threaded rods, so I decided to use the same materials to build up a kind of screen were we could place the photographies. With that solution the budget for the montage went down considerably but another problem arised; mi arrival to France was delayed and Adrien would be alone to build them up, so I redesigned it all.

El resultado fue una estructura simple, fácil de construir, de transportar y almacenar, barata y de muy buen ver (al menos eso nos han dicho los visitantes), que además, nos permite adaptar las exposiciones a múltiples espacios y formas, las podemos colocar en semicírculo, línea, escalonadas, etc... Las exposiciones son nuevas cada día y esa flexibilidad nos permite también responder al andar del público, si vemos que la gente llega preferentemente por un lugar, al día siguiente o ese mismo día nos reconfiguramos.
The result was a simple structure, easy to build, to transport and store, cheap and good looking, that also let us adapt the exhibitions to differente spaces, we can place them forming half of a circle, on line, staggered, etc... In some way, the exhibitions are new every day and that flexibility let us adapt to the public stroll, if we see them coming preferently from one way, the next day or that same day, we are able to reconfigurate ourselves.

Hasta ahora los páneles han aguantado de maravilla el sol y la lluvia, viento también, siempre y cuando estén colocados sobre un suelo con pasto, pues cuando el suelo es liso y el viento va a más de 50 km/hr aprendimos que se necesita un soporte adicional para mantenerlas en pie.
So far, the panels have very well resisted the sun and the rain, wind as well, as long as they are placed over grass, because when they are over flat ground with winds of more than 50 km/hr, we learned that an additional suport is needed to keep them standing.

Sobre las fotografías, como mencioné antes ya casi estaban todas seleccionadas, sólo hicimos una edición final y decidimos los tamaños de cada una. Fue relativamente fácil, considerando que claro, el fotógrafo quería imprimir todo en tamaño monumental y yo, quería imprimir todo dentro de un presupuesto ajustado; pero la verdad es que fue sencillo y los dos quedamos contentos con el resultado. ¿Me habría gustado imprimir todo más grande? ¡Por supuesto! El problema con aumentar el tamaño no solo es el costo de la impresión, sino el costo y espacio para la transportación y manipulación, recordemos que nuestro equipo de montaje somos solamente nosotros dos y nuestro transporte, una camioneta que soporta menos de 3.5 toneladas.
About the pictures, as I mentioned before almost everything was already chosen, we just made a final selection and decided the sizes for each one of them. It was relativately easy, considering of course that the photographer wanted to print everything in big format, while me, I wanted to keep everything under a tight budget; but honestly it was easy and we both were happy with the result. Would I wanted to print everything bigger? Absolutely! The problem with going bigger is not only the cost of printing grows, but also the cost and space of transportation and storage, lets remember our team is formed by only the two of us and a van that carries less than 3.5 ton.

En cuánto a la impresión, nuestra primera idea por suerte no sucedió. Íbamos a imprimir las fotografías en dos materiales distintos: canvas, que es una impresión sobre téxtil que luego se coloca sobre un marco de madera, y dibond, que es una impresión directa en aluminio. Las dos tenían un costo similar, pero la primera era ligeramente más barata. La ventaja de imprimir en dos materiales es que tendríamos texturas y volumetrías diferentes; pero finalmente Adrien me convenció de hacerlo todo sobre aluminio y fue la mejor decisión: el aluminio ha sobrevivido al sol, la lluvia, el polvo, los insectos y hasta al viento. La calidad de impresión es inmejorable, incluso cuando comparamos la misma imagen impresa en papel para las postales, los colores sobre el aluminio no se modifican.
About the printing, we had a first idea that luckily we didn't follow. We were going to print the photographies over two different materials: canvas, a print over textile placed on a wooden frame, and dibond, a direct print over aluminium; both with similar costs, but the first slightly cheaper. The advantage of printing over two materials was having different textures and volumes; but finally Adrien convinced me to do everything on dibond and it was the best decission: aluminium has survived to the sun, rain, dust, insects and even the wind. The quality of impression is outstanding and even when compare to the postal cards paper printing, colors over aluminium don't modify.
