Siguiendo con nuestro tour de fotografía.
Al día siguiente de que terminamos temporada en un lugar nos tomamos la mañana con calma y empezamos el camino después del mediodía, a veces nos detenemos en algún punto intermedio para ver otros lugares y pasar la noche antes de llegar a nuestro próximo destino. Procuramos estar al menos un día antes en la nueva locación para así, hablar con la alcaldía y revisar el espacio donde estaremos. Montar las exposiciones al aire libre nos toma una buena cantidad de tiempo, cerca de dos horas el primer día, los demás un poco menos si es que no tenemos que movernos. Luego, al cierre de cada día, hay que desmontar y guardarlo todo de vuelta en la camioneta, por alguna razón siento que a esa hora somos más rápidos pero igual es al menos una hora de trabajo, salvo que exista la maravillosa posibilidad de dejar los paneles colocados en el exterior, lo cual puede reducir el trabajo alrededor de unos veinte o treinta minutos. Por todos esos detalles y más, es que suele ser útil llegar un día antes.

The day after we finish a season at one place we try to take the morning very easy, enough to start our way after midday; sometimes we just do half so we can stop to visit a touristic venue and spend the night somewhere else before arriving to our new location. We also try to arrive at least one day before the opening so we can present ourselves to the people from the town hall and to check the place for the exhibitions. Mounting at an open space is a lot of work, we need at least two hours the first time and the following days we can reduce it a little bit, once the sequence seems known again. Later, at the end of each day we have to take everything and pack it back up into the truck, which for some reason, I feel, we do in less time, but anyway it means at least one hour, unless we have the wonderful chance to leave the pannels on site, wich can save around twenty to thirty minutes. For all these and other details, we like to get one day before.

Así fue como llegamos a este pueblecito de menos de 500 personas: hermosas vistas, flores por todos lados, un lugar muy pintoresco. Nos presentamos en el ayuntamiento donde ya nos esperaban y entre otras cosas, nos anunciaron que el primer fin de semana compartiríamos espacio en el parque que habían destinado para nosotros con su famoso mercado de pulgas, una noticia excelente porque eso atraería más visitantes y porque también es padre tener vecinos. Los mercados, de pulgas o de comida, suelen estar acostumbrados a cierto tipo de puestos y cuando las otras personas nos ven instalarnos con fotos se sorprenden y creo que como ven que no somos competencia suelen ser muy amables con nosotros.
That is how we got into this little town of less than 500 people: gorgeous views, flowers everywhere, it was all like a postal card. We presented ourselves to the lady at the town hall who was waiting for us and who told us that we would have to share our spot at the park with their famous fly market on our first sunday; an excellent news because that meant the chance to have more visitors and also because is nice to have neighbours. Markets in general are use to have certain kind of stands, so when the other people see us arrive and place large photographs they are surprised and because we are not competing with their products I think they treat us nicer.

Amé como nos presentaron su mercado de pulgas, es tan famoso en la región que recibe cientos y hasta miles de visitantes, según ellos, ¡hasta ocho mil! ¡Ocho mil personas en un pueblito cuyo centro es una rotonda! (lo digo en serio, el centro es una rotonda en cuyas esquinas se encuentran tres cafés, un minisúper y la charcutería). Mi primera idea fue: ¿sabrán cómo se ven 8 mil personas juntas? Por supuesto las ocho mil personas no llegarían al mismo tiempo, pero verlas reunidas da una claridad sobre lo que ese número significa; pero no solo se trata de las personas, hay que pensar en los servicios que tanta gente necesita: el estacionamiento, baños públicos, basureros, etc. Lo chistoso para mí fue que nos encontramos con cifras así de grandes y de imposibles en varios lugares, personas que nos aseguraban concurrencias de cinco mil personas, a veces en tan sólo medio día y en espacios más chiquitos que el patio de deportes de mi secundaria.
I adored the presented for their famous fly market, so important at the region that receives not hundreds but thousands of visitors, eight thousand! Really? Eight thousand people in a little town whose center is a roundabout! (And I mean it, at the corners of the roundabout you can find the three coffee places, a convenience store and the delicatessen). My first thought was, would they know how eight thousand people look like? All together at once? Of course if they arrive they wouldn't come at the same time, but if you could see them all together is possible to have a more accurate idea of what the number means; because is not only about the people but also the services needed, such as parking space, public restrooms, waste containers, etc. The funny thing for me was that we faced such impossible numbers at other places, other example was a location where we were told they normally receive five thousand visitors at a venue smaller than my highschool yard and just in half of a regular day.

Ese domingo llegamos más temprano de lo normal para hacer nuestro montaje al mismo tiempo que los puestos regulares del mercado y por supuesto, estuve muy atenta a la concurrencia. No me dediqué exclusivamente a contar la gente que visitaba el mercado, pero estuve dando vueltas, contando gente cada hora y visité el estacionamiento. Mi cálculo final, considerando un amplio factor de error, fue de 1,600 a 1,800 visitantes. Adrien soltó una carcajada y me dijo que seguramente mi técnica para contar la había adquirido en un entrenamiento de la policía francesa porque distaba muchísimo de la cifra que tenían los organizadores. Como típicamente ocurre después de una manifestación, los organizadores claman 2 millones de asistentes, y la cifra oficial que emite la policía o gobierno es de 600 mil. ¿Cómo le hacen para llegar a números tan dispares? Un absoluto misterio.
That sunday we arrived earlier than usual so we could mount at the same time as regular stands, and of course I was extremely attentive to the visitors for the market. I couldn't focus only on that but I went around several times and visited the parking lot. My estimation at the end of the day was, considering a large margin of error, around 1,600 to 1,800 visitors. Adrien laughed outloud, he thought I was probably trained to count people at the facilities of the French police because my number seemed extremely differente from the one we where given. And of course, it happens everywhere, that after a strike or people manifesting, organizers claim two million people attended the meeting, while the official number given by the police or government speaks of six hundred thousand. How do they achieve to get such opposite numbers? It is an absolute mistery. The same mistery surrounding my estimation of less than 2 thousand visitors in comparison to the 8 thousand the market "normally" receives.

Todo ello me hizo pensar en cómo decidimos contar asistentes. Para Adrien, especialmente al principio, 50 personas en un día era un sueño hecho realidad, yo esperaba cientos antes de terminar el tour más porque en México estoy acostumbrada a ver siempre mucha gente pero cuando sobrepasamos los mil visitantes pensé que habíamos llegado al cielo. Supongo que por esa ingenuidad y también porque no tenemos un subsidio que nos exija un resultado fue que decidimos solamente contar a la gente que de verdad viera nuestro trabajo; al menos que se detuviera a ver una de las dos exposiciones. Nos ha tocado un público variado: gente que se acerca y en menos de un minuto se va, quienes preguntan horarios para regresar con su familia, quienes ven todo con cuidado, leen todos los textos y se acercan todavía a preguntar, o que solo hacen preguntas; en fin, de todo un poco. No contamos a quienes echan un vistazo rápido o solamente se acercan a un par de fotos, para nosotros es como si no les interesó el proyecto y entonces no tiene sentido incluirlos en los números que queremos analizar para ayudarnos en los futuros proyectos.
Anyway, it all made me think on our method to count visitors. For Adrien, specially at the begining, counting fifty people on one day was like a dream come true; I expected hundreds for the whole tour since I'm use to see many people in Mexico, but when we overpassed the thousand I thought we were at heaven. I guess that because of that naiveness and because we are working with no public money or grant where we need to justify our results, is that we decided to count just the people who was really into our work, meaning they would stop to see at least one of the two exhibitions. We have had a variety of public: from the ones who come close and in less than a minute go away, to the ones who ask for the dates and opening times so they can come back with their family, the ones who see with careful detail, read it all and after come to ask some questions, the ones who just ask questions; a little bit of everything. We don't count the ones who see everything at a quick glance or just stop for a pair of photos, for us they are not really into the project so counting them makes no point for the final numbers that may help us for future projects.

Hasta el día de hoy llevamos 4,373 asistentes contados y me parece increíble, un número al que no habría apuntado si me hubieran preguntado al principio, y es que el proyecto me parece bueno y las fotos maravillosas, pero sin campaña de publicidad, enfocados en visitar ciudades de mediana y pequeña talla, y con un tiempo relativamente corto para la planeación y producción, no imaginé que llegaríamos a lograr tan buena aceptación. Supongo que el mito de las convocatorias en redes sociales es parcialmente cierto; y sí, me siento orgullosa de haber logrado este número sin supuestas campañas en redes sociales, en parte porque es otra forma de comprobar que no hay fórmulas mágicas. También es cierto que hemos recibido ayuda a cada paso y hemos sido muy afortunados de que a la gente le haya gustado mucho nuestro trabajo; la única decisión clave que tomamos en cuánto a este rubro fue que pensamos las exposiciones para estar en espacios públicos al exterior. No siempre nos presentamos así, por razones diversas y fuera de nuestro control, pero siempre que hemos estado en exterior la gente se interesa y se acerca a ver lo que hay en los paneles.
We have counted 4,373 visitors to date and for me is outstanding, if you have asked me before the start I would have never point to such a number, I think the project is good and the photographs marvelous, but having no publicity, focused on visiting small and medium sized towns, and with a tight schedule for planning and production, I never imagined we could achieve such a great number. I guess also the myth of Facebook promotion is partially true; and yes, I feel very proud of achieving that number without any alleged social media campaign, in part because is another proof that there are no magic formulas. On the other hand, we achieved this with tons of help, and we've been very lucky that people really liked our work; the only decision I would say was really key in this aspect, was the fact we thought on the exhibitions for outdoors public spaces. Not always we could stay at the outside, because we depended on other factos but every time we were at an exterior we achieved to interest most of the people passing by.

Creo que los espacios usuales para presentar exposiciones han logrado separarse tan bien del público que mucha gente prefiere no visitarlos, lo vemos por ejemplo aquí en Champtoceaux, la oficina de turismo está a menos de cincuenta metros de nosotros, tiene una exposición de fotos y esculturas, y las únicas personas arremolinándose para entrar a verlas fueron las que vinieron el día de la inauguración; los niños que vienen a jugar al arenero y columpios que están frente a nosotros ni por error entran en ese edificio, tampoco sus abuelos o papás, pero ocasionalmente se acercan a ver las fotos maravillados o a esconderse entre los paneles.
I think spaces who ususally house exhibitions, at least for photography, have achieved to separate themeselves from the public so well that now they struggle to get visits. We see that here at Champtoceaux, the tourism office is less than fifty meters from us, it is presenting a exhibition with both photography and scultures, and the only people thriving to see them were the ones who came the day of the inauguration; kids who come to play to the swings and sandpit in front of us not even by mistake intend to enter that building, neither their parents or grandparents, but ocassionally they aproach to admire happily the photographs or at least to play in between the pannels.  

El domingo próximo es nuestro último día de exposición itinerante; pensar en que el final está tan cerca es lo que nos ha impulsado a levantarnos estos últimos días porque ya estamos cansados, nunca pensé que toda esta rutina de montar y desmontar diario sería tan demandante. Creo que llegaremos sin problema a los 4,500 visitantes, pero mientras ese día llegue seguiré contando.
Next sunday is our last day with the itinerant exhibition; having on mind the end is so close is what have made us wake up these last mornings, I never thought all the routine of mounting and packing away every day would be so hard. I think we will easily achieve the 4,500 visitors, but while that day arrives I'll keep on counting.
